Making Strawberry Plants from Runners

Although we don't sell strawberry plants I am still a big fan of this humble plant. They are easy to grow and come back every year and that alone makes them a winner in my book! The neat thing about them is you can start with just a few plants and end up with 10 times that amount quickly. The way this is achieved is by taking advantage of the strawberry plant's runners that are sent out yearly.

Every season established strawberry plants will send out vines also known as runners. These runners are called the "daughter plants" because they are identical to the "mother plant". Now you can either let the runners take root in the same bed or you control where they take root by trying the below method.

What we do is take a small potting cup and fill it with some compost from our compost heap. We then take the runner and place it in the cup and add a bobby pin over the runner to secure it to the soil. That way if it rains hard the runner will not be washed out or moved. Once the runner has rooted we then take scissors and snip it from the mother plant. Then you can plant it where you would like it to grow. This is a simple way to quickly multiply your strawberries and add more strawberry beds to your garden!
