Golden ball turnips, scientifically named Brassica rapa var. rapa, are part of the Brassicaceae family, also known as the mustard family. These turnips are renowned for their spherical, golden-yellow roots that offer a mild, slightly sweet taste. What sets the golden ball variety apart is its tender and smooth texture, making it ideal for various culinary uses.
In the kitchen, golden ball turnips can be roasted, mashed, or added raw to salads. Not only are the roots edible, but the greens are also nutritious and can be cooked like spinach or kale. For a smoother texture, you can peel the skin before cooking, although the skin is edible too. Their subtle flavor makes them a versatile ingredient that complements both sweet and savory dishes.

How to Save Seeds
Separate turnips from other plants in the Brassica Rapa family. Plants are biennial so will require overwintering with mulch or trim leaves to 2 inches above the bulb and store them in a root cellar in either damp sawdust or sand. Replant in spring and wait for them to flower; when pods dry out they are ready.
