American Purple Top Rutabaga is a classic heirloom root vegetable prized for its excellent storage qualities, mild sweet flavor, and dependable productivity. A member of the Brassicaceae family, this traditional variety is believed to have originated as a natural cross between cabbage and turnip. Its distinctive purple crown, creamy yellow lower portion, and rich yellow flesh make it both attractive and highly valued in the kitchen.

The firm roots offer a mildly sweet, slightly peppery flavor that becomes even more pleasant after exposure to cool autumn temperatures. American Purple Top Rutabagas are excellent for soups, stews, casseroles, roasting, mashing, and other cooked dishes. Their dense texture and rich flavor make them a popular choice for fall and winter meals, while their excellent storage ability allows gardeners to enjoy harvests long after the growing season has ended.

This cool-season crop thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and performs best in full sun. Rutabagas prefer cooler temperatures and are commonly planted in early spring or late summer for fall harvests. Consistent moisture throughout the growing season encourages uniform root development and helps maintain tender, high-quality roots. Avoiding excessive heat improves both flavor and overall crop quality.

Nutritious, easy to grow, and highly versatile, American Purple Top Rutabaga remains one of the finest heirloom root crops for gardeners seeking dependable harvests, excellent storage potential, and outstanding culinary value.

How to Save Seeds

Rutabagas can cross-pollinate with closely related brassicas. To maintain varietal purity, separate seed crops from compatible Brassica varieties whenever possible and select only healthy, vigorous plants for seed production.

Because rutabagas are biennial plants, they must overwinter before producing seed. In mild climates, protect plants with heavy mulch throughout winter. In colder regions, trim the foliage to approximately 2 inches above the root and store the roots in damp sand or sawdust in a cool root cellar.

Replant the stored roots in early spring and allow them to develop flowering stalks. After pollination, long seed pods will form and gradually mature on the plants.

Allow the seed pods to dry completely on the plant before harvesting. Once collected, remove the seeds from the pods and store them in a cool, dry location for future planting.
