How to Save Seeds

Lettuce is primarily self-pollinating, so different varieties can generally be grown approximately 50 feet apart while maintaining seed purity.

For seed saving, lettuce plants should be established and about 2 inches tall before cold weather arrives. Plants may be heavily mulched through winter and allowed to continue growing the following season.

Once plants bolt, the leaves become bitter and inedible as tall flowering stalks begin forming. The plants will send up stalks reaching 4 to 5 feet tall followed by flowers that continue blooming over several weeks.

As feathery seed heads begin developing, collect mature seeds by gently shaking them into a paper bag. Allow seeds to dry thoroughly before storing in a cool dry location.
