Florida Broadleaf Mustards, scientifically known as Brassica juncea, belong to the Brassicaceae family; this family also includes cabbage, broccoli, and kale. These mustards are a popular leafy green vegetable in many Southern gardens due to their robust growth and versatility in the kitchen. They boast large, dark green leaves with a slightly spicy, peppery flavor that can add a kick to salads, sandwiches, and cooked dishes.

In terms of care, regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulching around the base of the plants can help retain soil moisture and control weeds. Harvesting can begin once the leaves are large enough to eat, which usually takes about 40 to 50 days from planting; cut the outer leaves first to allow the plant to continue producing more foliage. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a novice, Florida Broadleaf Mustards offer a nutritious and flavorful addition to your garden and your meals.

How to Save Seeds

Mustard greens will cross with other mustard greens within the same species but not the same family. So be sure to check each species before planting near another species of mustard otherwise separate by at least 1 mile. Save pods from plants once they have fully dried.
