Georgia Rattlesnake watermelon is a treasured heirloom variety dating back to the 19th century and admired for its enormous size, striking striped rind, and exceptionally sweet bright red flesh. Its distinctive green striping resembles the pattern of a rattlesnake’s skin, giving this historic watermelon its memorable name and eye-catching appearance in the garden.

These impressive oblong melons can grow up to 24 inches long and frequently reach weights of 30 pounds or more under ideal growing conditions. Beneath the beautifully patterned rind lies crisp juicy flesh bursting with rich sweetness, making this variety a favorite for summer picnics, gatherings, fresh slicing, and refreshing desserts.

Georgia Rattlesnake watermelon thrives in warm sunny conditions with fertile well-drained soil and plenty of room for sprawling vines. Its vigorous growth and dependable productivity reward gardeners with large flavorful melons that mature beautifully during the heat of summer. Although the rind is relatively thin and easy to cut, careful handling is recommended to prevent bruising.

Beautiful, historic, and wonderfully sweet, Georgia Rattlesnake watermelon remains one of the finest heirloom watermelon varieties for gardeners seeking impressive harvests and classic summer flavor.

How to Save Seeds

Watermelons will readily cross-pollinate with other watermelon varieties, so isolation distances of approximately 1/4 mile are recommended for maintaining seed purity.

Allow melons to fully ripen on the vine before harvesting seeds. Mature fruits typically produce fully developed viable seeds ready for collection.

Cut ripe melons open and scoop seeds from the center along with the surrounding pulp. Separate seeds from the pulp using water and follow a fermentation and rinsing process similar to cucumber seed saving if desired.

After cleaning, spread seeds out on screens or paper towels and allow them to dry thoroughly before storing in a cool dry location for future planting.
