Gold Yarrow, scientifically known as Achillea filipendulina, is a striking perennial flower admired for its vibrant golden-yellow blooms and soft fern-like foliage. Native to the Balkan Peninsula, this hardy and drought-tolerant plant has become a favorite in cottage gardens, pollinator landscapes, and naturalized plantings thanks to its long bloom season and easy-care nature.

Growing up to 3 feet tall, Gold Yarrow features elegant bluish-green foliage with finely divided leaves that add soft texture and visual interest even when the plant is not in bloom. In midsummer, sturdy upright stems produce large flat-topped clusters of brilliant yellow flowers that can reach up to 6 inches across, creating a bold splash of color in the garden.

The bright flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators throughout the blooming season. Gold Yarrow also makes an excellent cut flower for fresh bouquets and dried floral arrangements due to its long-lasting blooms and sturdy stems.

Adaptable and low maintenance, Gold Yarrow thrives in sunny locations with well-draining soil and performs exceptionally well in drought-tolerant landscapes, rock gardens, prairie plantings, and wildflower gardens.

How to Grow

Choose a planting location with full sun and well-draining soil. Gold Yarrow thrives in bright sunny conditions and tolerates poor soils once established.

Prepare the soil by loosening the top layer and removing weeds or rocks. Amend heavy soils with compost or sand if needed to improve drainage.

Sow seeds in spring after the last frost or in fall at least 6 weeks before the first expected frost. Scatter seeds thinly and lightly cover with a fine layer of soil.

Water gently after planting and keep the soil lightly moist during germination. Seeds typically germinate within 10-14 days depending on weather conditions.

Thin seedlings to approximately 12 inches apart once plants are a few inches tall. Proper spacing encourages strong growth and healthy airflow.

Once established, Gold Yarrow requires very little maintenance and is highly drought tolerant. Water during prolonged dry periods and fertilize lightly once yearly in spring if desired.

With minimal care, Gold Yarrow will provide vibrant long-lasting blooms that brighten the garden while attracting pollinators and supporting beneficial wildlife throughout the season.
