 How to Grow

To grow anise, start by selecting a spot with well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Anise prefers a warm and dry climate, so it is important to choose a location that receives full sun for most of the day. Once you have chosen your planting location, prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of about 6 inches. Add compost or well-rotted manure to the soil to improve its fertility and nutrient content. Next, sow anise seeds about 1/4 inch deep and space them about 6 inches apart. Water the seeds well and keep the soil consistently moist until the seedlings emerge. As the anise plants grow, thin them to about 12 inches apart to give each plant enough space to develop. Anise does not require a lot of fertilizer, but you can use a balanced fertilizer once or twice during the growing season to encourage healthy growth. Harvest anise when the seed heads turn brown and start to dry out. Cut the seed heads from the plant and hang them upside down in a dry, well-ventilated area to finish drying. Once the seeds are completely dry, remove them from the seed heads and store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
