Tall Strawflowers, also known as everlasting flowers, are vibrant flowering annuals admired for their papery blooms that retain both their color and shape long after drying. Native to Australia and belonging to the Asteraceae family, these striking flowers are treasured for their beauty in both fresh garden displays and dried floral arrangements.

Tall Strawflowers produce sturdy upright stems that can grow up to 3 feet tall and are topped with colorful daisy-like blooms in shades of yellow, pink, orange, red, and white. Their unique papery petals surround a central golden disk, creating eye-catching flowers that bloom continuously throughout the growing season.

These flowers are highly valued for dried flower crafts, bouquets, wreaths, and everlasting floral displays due to their remarkable ability to preserve their appearance after harvest. In the garden, Strawflowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators while adding bold color and texture to flower beds and borders.

Easy to grow and low maintenance, Tall Strawflowers thrive in sunny locations and reward gardeners with abundant blooms from summer into fall.

How to Grow Tall Strawflowers

Choose a sunny location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Strawflowers grow best in well-drained soil with moderate fertility and slightly acidic conditions.

Before planting, improve the soil by mixing in compost or well-rotted organic matter to encourage healthy root development and flowering.

Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost date or start seeds indoors several weeks early for earlier blooms. Plant seeds approximately 1/4 inch deep and space them 6 to 12 inches apart.

Keep the soil evenly moist during germination and early growth, but avoid overly wet conditions. Once established, water deeply about once per week or more often during periods of extreme heat and drought.

Apply a balanced fertilizer monthly throughout the growing season if desired. Regular deadheading of spent blooms will encourage continuous flowering and keep plants producing vibrant flowers all season long.

For dried flowers, harvest blooms when they are partially open and hang them upside down in a cool dry location to preserve their color and shape beautifully.
