Black Krim tomatoes are a legendary heirloom variety prized for their dramatic dark coloration, rich complex flavor, and exceptional garden performance. Originating from the Isle of Krim in the Black Sea region, this historic tomato has become a favorite among gardeners, chefs, and heirloom tomato enthusiasts around the world.

The large beefsteak-style fruits commonly weigh over one pound and develop a deep mahogany to purplish-black coloration when fully ripe, often accented with green shoulders near the stem. Their unique appearance makes Black Krim tomatoes one of the most visually striking heirloom varieties available for home gardens and market displays.

Black Krim tomatoes are especially celebrated for their bold rich flavor profile. The taste is complex and intensely satisfying, combining natural sweetness with subtle acidity and a distinctive smoky undertone. Many gardeners also note a slightly salty richness that makes these tomatoes unforgettable when enjoyed fresh.

Their juicy texture and meaty flesh make them ideal for slicing onto sandwiches and burgers, layering into salads, or serving fresh with herbs and cheese. They also perform beautifully in sauces, roasted dishes, and gourmet recipes where their deep flavor truly shines.

This indeterminate heirloom variety grows vigorously and produces continuously throughout the season. Plants thrive in full sunlight with fertile well-drained soil and benefit from staking or caging to support the heavy fruits and sprawling vines.

Whether you're an experienced gardener or growing heirloom tomatoes for the first time, Black Krim is a rewarding variety that delivers outstanding beauty, exceptional flavor, and abundant harvests.

How to Save Black Krim Tomato Seeds

Tomatoes are primarily self-pollinating, so separating different tomato varieties by approximately 50 feet is generally sufficient for maintaining seed purity.

Harvest fully ripe tomatoes for seed saving. Fruits may even be allowed to sit for about a week after harvest before processing the seeds.

Cut the tomatoes in half and scoop the seeds and pulp into a mason jar partially filled with water. Cover the jar loosely and place it in a warm area away from direct sunlight to ferment for approximately 5 to 7 days.

After fermentation, remove and discard any floating seeds and mold from the surface. Pour the remaining viable seeds through a fine mesh strainer, rinse thoroughly, and spread them onto a screen or paper towel to dry completely. Stir or turn the seeds regularly during drying to prevent sticking before storing them in a cool dry location.
