The Black Turtle Bean, scientifically known as Phaseolus vulgaris, is a standout member of the bean family, especially celebrated in Latin American cuisine. With its striking black hue and robust flavor, this bean is a key ingredient in soups, stews, and vibrant salads. Its firm texture allows it to absorb flavors exceptionally well, enhancing both taste and nutritional value.

Nutritionally, Black Turtle beans are powerhouses, rich in protein and fiber, making them an excellent choice for those aiming to maintain a balanced diet.

Cultivating Black Turtle beans is akin to hosting a well planned garden event; optimal growing conditions are essential. These beans thrive in full sunlight and prefer well drained soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Plant them after the last frost, when soil temperatures reach approximately 60°F. In about 90 to 105 days, expect a flourishing crop. However, it is crucial to water them gently, particularly during the flowering and pod-forming stages, as over-watering can harm their roots.

In summary, Black Turtle beans serve not only as a delicious and nutritious component of meals but also as a rewarding crop to grow in your garden. With proper care, they will yield a generous harvest that benefits both your culinary endeavors and your gardening skills.

How to Save Seeds

Beans seldom cross pollinate with one another since they are considered to be self pollinators. However that isn't to say it won't occur. So as a precaution it is recommended to grow to different colors of beans near one another if you are limited on space and then observe the seeds when ready. The seed will show signs of crossing if you grew to different colors. If you are concerned about crossing separate by 150ft as a rule. Harvest when completely dried; cure them for a week or so by allowing them to further dry out in their pods spread out from one another, then shell and discard trash.
