How to Save Champion Collard Seeds

Champion Collards can cross-pollinate with other members of the Brassica oleracea family, including broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. To maintain seed purity, separate varieties by approximately one mile whenever possible.

Champion Collards require overwintering in order to produce seeds. In mild climates, plants may be heavily mulched to survive winter outdoors. In colder climates, carefully dig up the plants and store them in pots of sand or soil in a cool area maintained between 35–40°F during winter.

Once spring arrives, return the plants to the garden and allow them to bolt naturally. After flowering, long seed pods will begin forming on the stalks. Allow the seed pods to fully dry on the plant before harvesting. Once dry, remove the seeds from the pods and store Champion Collard seeds in a cool, dry location for future planting seasons.
