The Dark Green Armenian cucumber, also known as the Snake Cucumber or Yard-Long Cucumber, is a unique heirloom variety treasured for its impressive length, crisp texture, and refreshing mild flavor. Despite its common name, this plant is technically a member of the melon family rather than a true cucumber, giving it distinctive growing characteristics and exceptional garden performance.
These elegant fruits grow long and slender, often reaching lengths of up to 3 feet while maintaining tender dark green skin and crisp juicy flesh. Unlike many cucumbers, the thin skin does not require peeling, and the mild sweet flavor contains very little bitterness, making this variety especially enjoyable fresh from the garden.
Dark Green Armenian cucumbers are highly versatile in the kitchen and can be enjoyed fresh in salads, sliced for sandwiches, pickled, spiralized, or served with dips and charcuterie. Their refreshing crunch and mild flavor make them an excellent addition to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern inspired dishes.
In addition to their outstanding flavor, these cucumbers are packed with nutrients including vitamins A, C, and K, along with potassium and fiber. Their high water content and low calorie profile make them a hydrating and nutritious garden snack during the warm summer months.
This vigorous warm-season plant thrives in full sunlight and fertile well-drained soil. The sprawling vines produce abundant harvests throughout the growing season and may be grown on the ground or trained vertically on trellises to encourage straighter fruits and save garden space.
Whether harvested young for maximum tenderness or allowed to grow impressively long, Dark Green Armenian cucumbers are a delicious and eye-catching addition to any home garden.

How to Save Dark Green Armenian Cucumber Seeds
Please note: Armenian cucumbers are not true cucumbers and will cross-pollinate with members of the Cucumis melo family, including melons. Keep this in mind when growing for seed saving purposes to avoid unwanted crossing.
To save seeds, allow the fruits to fully mature on the vine until they turn yellow and become overripe. Once mature, cut the cucumber open and scoop the seeds into a bowl. Rinse the seeds thoroughly to remove pulp and residue.
Spread the cleaned seeds onto a paper towel, plate, or screen and allow them to dry completely in a warm well-ventilated location for approximately one week. Once fully dry, store the seeds in a labeled paper envelope or glass jar in a cool dark location until the next planting season.
Properly stored Armenian cucumber seeds can remain viable for years, allowing you to continue growing this flavorful heirloom variety season after season.
