Dotted St. John’s Wort, scientifically known as Hypericum punctatum, is a hardy native perennial wildflower found throughout much of North America. This cheerful plant is admired for its bright yellow blooms, adaptability, and ability to attract pollinators to the garden. It belongs to the Hypericaceae family, which includes several well-known St. John’s Wort species.

Growing up to 3 feet tall, Dotted St. John’s Wort features upright branching stems lined with oval-shaped green leaves. The leaves contain tiny translucent oil glands that create a dotted or perforated appearance when held up to light, giving the plant its common name.

From early summer through late summer, the plant produces clusters of small golden-yellow flowers with five petals and prominent stamens. These nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects, making this plant an excellent addition to pollinator-friendly landscapes and native wildflower gardens.

Dotted St. John’s Wort is easy to grow and adaptable to many soil conditions once established. Its drought tolerance, natural beauty, and wildlife value make it a favorite for gardeners seeking low-maintenance native perennials.

How to Grow

Choose a sunny location for planting. Dotted St. John’s Wort grows best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in warmer climates. Select an area that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.

Prepare the soil by loosening it and incorporating compost or organic matter to improve fertility and drainage. Although adaptable, this plant performs best in moderately fertile, well-drained soil.

Sow seeds in spring or fall by lightly pressing them into the soil surface. Keep the soil lightly moist during germination. Seeds may take several weeks to sprout depending on temperature and moisture conditions.

Water regularly while young plants establish. Once mature, Dotted St. John’s Wort becomes fairly drought tolerant and requires only occasional watering during extended dry periods.

Apply a balanced fertilizer once monthly during the growing season if desired, though excessive fertilization is generally unnecessary.

Prune plants lightly in early spring or fall to remove dead stems and encourage healthy growth. Deadheading spent flowers may encourage prolonged blooming and help manage self-seeding.

With minimal care, Dotted St. John’s Wort will reward gardeners with bright summer blooms, valuable pollinator support, and dependable perennial beauty year after year.
