How to Save Seeds

Cabbage will cross-pollinate with other members of the Brassica oleracea family, including broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts, so isolation by approximately one mile is recommended for maintaining seed purity.

Cabbage requires overwintering before producing seed. In milder climates, plants may be heavily mulched to protect them through winter.

In colder climates, carefully dig plants before severe freezing temperatures arrive and transplant them into containers filled with slightly damp sand. Store plants over winter in a cool area maintained between 35-40°F.

When spring arrives, replant the cabbage outdoors and allow plants to bolt and form seed pods. Once pods dry completely on the plant, harvest and store the seeds for future planting.
