Cumin is a wonderfully aromatic culinary herb prized for its earthy pungent flavor and versatility in the kitchen. Widely used in dishes such as chili, curry, hummus, soups, tacos, rice dishes, and spice blends, cumin is a staple ingredient in cuisines around the world.

Both the leaves and seeds can be used to flavor foods, though the seeds are especially valued for their warm slightly smoky taste and fragrant aroma. Cumin plants are vigorous growers that thrive in warm dry conditions and perform especially well in sunny herb gardens and raised beds.

This heat-loving annual herb is an excellent addition to culinary gardens, homesteads, and herb collections. Its delicate foliage and attractive flower heads also provide ornamental appeal while attracting beneficial pollinators to the garden.

How to Grow

Cumin is sensitive to cold temperatures and should be planted only after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed properly. Seeds may also be started indoors approximately 4 to 6 weeks before the final expected frost date.

If transplanting seedlings outdoors, wait until soil temperatures have reached at least 65°F for best growth and establishment.

Prepare fertile well-drained soil by incorporating organic matter and a balanced organic fertilizer before planting. Choose a sunny location with good drainage, as cumin performs especially well in warm drier conditions.

Cumin is grown as an annual herb. Allow plants to flower and develop seed heads naturally. Once the seed heads mature and dry, harvest them carefully and store the seeds in airtight containers for future culinary use or replanting.

When looking for our seeds for this year, my husband and I wanted to prioritize a few things 1. Christian, 2. non-GMO/organic, 3. family owned 4. high quality. We were delighted to check every box with South Ga Seed Co. We were impressed with the variety of seeds, packaging, shipping time, and personalized note when our package arrived. We haven’t reaped the benefits of planting the seeds yet- but with the experience thus far we expect great yields!
