Purple Top White Globe Turnips are a classic heirloom variety cherished for their beautiful appearance, rapid growth, and dependable harvests. Known as one of the most attractive and marketable turnips available, these roots develop a striking bright purple crown above creamy white lower portions, creating a colorful and eye-catching addition to both gardens and kitchen tables.

This variety produces smooth globe-shaped roots with crisp pure white flesh that is fine-grained, tender, and mild in flavor. Their balanced sweet-earthy taste makes them excellent for both fresh eating and cooked dishes, while their vigorous growth and heavy yields make them a favorite among home gardeners and market growers alike.

Purple Top White Globe turnips are highly versatile in the kitchen and can be roasted, mashed, steamed, sautéed, added to soups and stews, or sliced fresh into salads and slaws. Young tender roots are especially sweet and flavorful, while the nutritious leafy greens can also be harvested and cooked like traditional southern greens.

These turnips thrive in cooler weather and develop best flavor during spring and fall growing seasons. Their quick maturity and reliable performance make them an excellent choice for succession planting, raised beds, and productive home gardens.

How to Save Purple Top White Globe Turnip Seeds

Turnips will cross-pollinate with other members of the Brassica rapa family, so proper isolation is important when saving seed. Separate flowering turnips from related crops whenever possible to maintain seed purity.

Turnips are biennial plants, meaning they produce seeds during their second growing season. To overwinter plants, either heavily mulch them in the garden or carefully lift the roots and trim leaves back to approximately 2 inches above the bulb.

Store lifted roots through winter in damp sand or sawdust inside a cool root cellar or protected storage area. Replant healthy roots in spring and allow the plants to flower and form seed pods.

Once the seed pods fully dry on the stalks, harvest them and allow additional curing if needed. Remove the seeds from the pods and store them in labeled airtight containers in a cool dry place for future planting seasons.
