Purple Vienna Kohlrabi is a striking heirloom variety dating back to the early 1800s and prized for its beautiful purple skin, crisp white flesh, and excellent flavor. This unique vegetable produces cabbage-like bulbs that grow above ground, making it both ornamental and highly productive in the garden.

The tender flavorful bulbs are delicious eaten raw, roasted, steamed, sautéed, or used as a substitute for cabbage in soups and stews. Its mild sweet flavor and crisp texture make it especially popular in salads, slaws, and fresh vegetable trays.

Purple Vienna Kohlrabi thrives in cooler growing conditions and performs wonderfully in spring and fall gardens. The eye-catching purple bulbs and dependable yields make it an excellent choice for home gardens, raised beds, homesteads, and market gardens.

How to Save Seeds

Kohlrabi will cross pollinate with all varieties of Brassica oleracea, so separate different varieties by at least 500 feet whenever possible to maintain seed purity.

Allow kohlrabi plants to mature fully and continue growing until seed pods begin forming and drying naturally on the plant.

Once the seed pods have dried, carefully harvest them from the plant and place them into a paper bag or container. Label the container with the variety name and harvest date for future reference.

Store harvested seed pods in a cool dry place until fully cured. Remove the seeds from the dried pods and keep them in labeled airtight containers or envelopes until ready for future planting.
