Seventop Turnip is a classic heirloom variety prized for its abundant leafy green tops and dependable cool-season growth. The vigorous plants produce lush tender foliage that can grow up to half a meter tall, creating a dense canopy of vibrant greens that adds both beauty and productivity to the garden.

The flavorful greens are rich in nutrients and possess a mild peppery taste that enhances salads, soups, sautés, and traditional Southern dishes. Beneath the leafy tops grows a modest creamy white root with a delicate earthy flavor that becomes especially tender and enjoyable when cooked or mashed.

Seventop Turnips thrive in cooler climates and perform best when planted in early spring or late summer. The small seeds germinate quickly in fertile well-drained soil under full sunlight, producing vigorous healthy growth with relatively little maintenance. Regular watering and occasional fertilization help encourage lush foliage and strong root development throughout the growing season.

Nutritious, dependable, and deeply rooted in traditional gardening heritage, Seventop Turnip remains one of the finest heirloom turnip varieties for gardeners seeking abundant leafy harvests and excellent cool-weather performance.

How to Save Seeds

Separate turnips from other plants within the Brassica rapa family to help maintain seed purity.

Turnips are biennial plants and typically require overwintering before producing seed during their second growing season.

Mulch plants heavily for winter protection or trim leaves to approximately 2 inches above the roots and store them in damp sawdust or sand within a cool root cellar before replanting in spring.

Allow plants to flower and form seed pods. Once the pods dry completely on the plants, harvest and store seeds in a cool dry location for future planting.
