How to Save Seeds
Cucumbers readily cross-pollinate with other cucumber varieties, so separate different varieties by at least 1/4 mile to maintain seed purity.
Allow cucumbers selected for seed saving to remain on the vine well past the normal eating stage. Mature seed cucumbers often become oversized and may turn yellowish or whitish in color.
Once fully mature, cut cucumbers from the vine and allow them to cure indoors for approximately 20 days before processing seeds.
Cut cucumbers lengthwise and scoop the seeds and pulp into a mason jar or container with a small amount of water for fermentation.
Seal loosely and place the container in a warm area out of direct sunlight for 5-7 days. During fermentation, mold and poor-quality seeds will float while healthy viable seeds sink to the bottom.
Pour off floating debris and rinse the remaining seeds thoroughly using a fine mesh strainer.
Spread cleaned seeds onto screens, paper towels, or drying racks and allow them to dry completely. Stir or turn seeds regularly to prevent sticking and ensure even drying before storing.
