★ Organically grown on our farm
Sumter Cucumber is a dependable heirloom variety prized for its crisp texture, mild flavor, and excellent productivity in the home garden. A member of the Cucurbitaceae family, this classic cucumber produces attractive dark green fruits that are well suited to both fresh eating and pickling. Its vigorous vines and reliable production make it a valuable choice for gardeners seeking a versatile cucumber throughout the warm growing season.
The firm fruits have a refreshing, mild flavor and crisp texture that make them excellent for fresh salads, sandwiches, vegetable trays, and slicing. Sumter Cucumber is also particularly well suited for pickling, where its firm texture helps produce flavorful homemade pickles. Harvesting the fruits while young and tender provides the best eating quality and encourages continued production.
This warm-season crop thrives in fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and performs best in full sun. Direct sow seeds after the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed. Consistent moisture is especially important during flowering and fruit development. Provide adequate spacing or a trellis to encourage good air circulation, keep fruits clean, and make harvesting easier throughout the season.
Productive, crisp, and highly versatile, Sumter Cucumber remains an excellent heirloom choice for gardeners seeking dependable harvests, fresh garden flavor, and outstanding quality for both slicing and home pickling.

How to Save Seeds
Cucumbers are insect-pollinated and will readily cross with other cucumber varieties. To maintain varietal purity, separate different cucumber varieties by at least one-quarter mile whenever possible, or use hand pollination and protect the flowers from insects.
Select several healthy plants and allow the fruits chosen for seed saving to remain on the vine well beyond the stage at which they would normally be harvested for eating. Seed-saving cucumbers should become oversized and fully mature before harvesting.
Harvest the mature cucumber once the fruit has begun to yellow and the seeds have fully developed. Cut the cucumber open lengthwise and scoop the seeds and surrounding pulp into a container with water.
Allow the seed mixture to ferment for several days. Rinse the seeds thoroughly, removing the pulp and any floating debris, then spread the cleaned seeds on a screen or paper surface to dry completely. Once fully dry, store the seeds in a cool, dry location for future planting.
