Tatsoi, also known as Brassica rapa subsp. narinosa, is a versatile and nutritious leafy green vegetable that hails from East Asia. Often referred to as "spinach mustard" or "spoon mustard" due to its spoon-shaped leaves, tatsoi is a member of the Brassicaceae family, which includes other well-known vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, and kale. It is characterized by its dark green, glossy leaves that form a rosette pattern close to the ground. Tatsoi's flavor is mild and slightly mustard-like, making it a popular choice in salads, stir-fries, soups, and as a garnish.

Growing tatsoi can be a rewarding experience for both novice and experienced gardeners. This hardy plant thrives in cooler temperatures, making it a great option for fall and early spring planting. It can tolerate light frost, which actually enhances its sweetness. Tatsoi requires well-drained, fertile soil and can be grown in full sun to partial shade. The plant matures quickly, usually within 45 days, and can be harvested at various stages of growth, from baby greens to full-sized rosettes. Regular watering and occasional feeding with a balanced fertilizer will help ensure a healthy, productive crop.

How to Save Seeds

Mustard greens will cross with other mustard greens within the same species but not the same family. So be sure to check each species before planting near another species of mustard otherwise separate by at least 1 mile. Save pods from plants once they have fully dried.
