★ Organically grown on our farm

True Comfrey is a striking and highly beneficial perennial herb valued by gardeners, homesteaders, and pollinators alike. Known scientifically as Symphytum officinale, this vigorous plant has been used for centuries in traditional garden and homestead practices.

Comfrey produces large textured green leaves and beautiful purple bell-shaped flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Mature plants can grow 2 to 3 feet tall and equally wide, creating a bold and lush appearance in the garden.

This plant is especially prized in organic gardening as a dynamic accumulator, meaning it pulls valuable nutrients and minerals deep from the soil. Comfrey leaves are commonly used for compost, compost tea, mulch, and soil improvement due to their rich nutrient content.

True Comfrey is an easy-to-maintain perennial once established and returns year after year with vigorous growth. Its usefulness, beauty, and pollinator value make it an excellent addition to permaculture gardens, homesteads, medicinal gardens, and organic growing systems.

How to Grow

****Please note comfrey seeds require cold stratification before planting. If planting in spring, place seeds in the refrigerator for at least 30 days prior to sowing, or direct sow outdoors in fall for natural winter stratification.****

Comfrey can be somewhat challenging to grow from seed due to naturally low germination rates and short seed viability. Patience is important when starting this beneficial perennial from seed.

Choose a planting location with rich well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Comfrey thrives in fertile soil rich in organic matter and benefits from plenty of growing space.

Scatter seeds over prepared soil and lightly cover them with a thin layer of soil. Water gently after planting, taking care not to wash seeds away.

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during germination. Germination can take several weeks or even months depending on conditions.

Once established, comfrey grows rapidly and vigorously with very little maintenance. Mature plants become drought tolerant and produce abundant foliage useful for composting and garden mulch.

Allow plenty of room for growth, as established comfrey plants become large long-lived perennials that return reliably year after year.

    True Comfrey Seeds

Posted by Jessika on 26th Oct 2025

I ordered these True Comfrey Seeds in July, and planted in a large barrel pot end of September. I have two plants coming up. As the planting notes say, they do take more time to sprout than other seeds, so definitely be patient. Not all seeds you plant will come up either. I think I planted 6 in the large pot, and have two coming up. I'm just excited to have two growing though. Would buy again!
