How to Save Seeds
Tomatoes are primarily self-pollinating, so separating different tomato varieties by approximately 50 feet is generally sufficient for seed saving purposes.
Allow fruits to fully ripen on the vine before harvesting for seed saving. Overripe tomatoes are often ideal for collecting mature viable seeds.
Cut ripe tomatoes in half and scoop the seeds and surrounding pulp into a mason jar or container partially filled with water. Cover loosely with a lid and place the jar in a warm location out of direct sunlight.
Allow the mixture to ferment for approximately 5-7 days. During fermentation, mold may form on the surface while viable seeds settle to the bottom.
After fermentation, carefully pour off floating debris, mold, and nonviable seeds. Pour the remaining good seeds through a fine mesh strainer and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Spread seeds onto a mesh screen, plate, or paper towel to dry completely. Stir or turn seeds regularly during drying to prevent sticking and ensure even drying before storage.
