The climbing brown speckled cowpea, also known as Vigna unguiculata, belongs to the legume family, Fabaceae. This specific variety, with its distinctive brown speckled seeds, is known for its vigorous growth and climbing ability; it can reach heights of up to eight feet if provided with adequate support, such as trellises or fences. The plant produces attractive, trifoliate leaves and small, pale purple to white flowers, which eventually give way to long, slender pods. These pods can be harvested when they are young and tender for use as a green vegetable, or left to mature for dry beans, which are rich in protein and essential nutrients.

In terms of cultivation, the climbing brown speckled cowpea requires minimal care once established; it is drought-tolerant and can fix nitrogen in the soil, making it an excellent choice for crop rotation and soil enrichment. To plant, sow seeds directly into the ground after the last frost; space them about six inches apart in rows that are two to three feet apart. Regular watering is necessary until the plants are well-established, after which they can withstand periods of dry weather. Cowpeas can be harvested continuously throughout the growing season; enjoy them fresh, dried, or even canned for long-term storage.

How to Save Seeds

 Cross pollination as with other self pollinates is uncommon among cowpeas. However you can space them 50ft apart. Much like English peas or beans collect pods when they are brown and dried out. You also might want to take pods off plants and allow them to cure, by spreading them out indoors or outdoors as long as there is no rain, before shelling to get peas.
