Fish Pepper is a rare and historic heirloom pepper variety treasured for its striking appearance, rich culinary heritage, and flavorful heat. Originating from African American communities in the Chesapeake Bay region during the 19th century, this pepper became a prized ingredient in seafood dishes where its balanced spice enhanced crab, oyster, and fish recipes throughout the coastal region.

The plants are exceptionally ornamental, producing beautiful variegated foliage streaked with shades of green and creamy white. As the peppers mature, they transition through a spectacular range of colors beginning with creamy white, then striped green, orange, brown, and finally deep vibrant red. This stunning progression makes Fish Pepper plants both highly productive and visually captivating in gardens and containers.

Fish Peppers deliver a medium level of heat with a warm inviting spice that enhances recipes without overwhelming them. Their flavor is excellent for seafood dishes, hot sauces, soups, stews, salsas, stir fries, and drying for pepper flakes or powder. The peppers add both beauty and versatility to the kitchen.

Easy to grow for gardeners of all experience levels, Fish Peppers thrive in fertile well-drained soil with full sunlight and consistent moisture. Plants are vigorous producers and perform especially well in warm climates and long growing seasons.

With its colorful fruits, historical significance, and outstanding flavor, Fish Pepper remains one of the most unique and rewarding heirloom peppers available for home gardens.

How to Save Fish Pepper Seeds

Peppers are primarily self-pollinating, though cross-pollination may occur between varieties of the same species. To maintain seed purity, separate pepper varieties by at least 500 feet whenever possible.

Allow Fish Peppers to fully ripen and dry naturally on the plant before harvesting. Once harvested, cut the peppers open and carefully remove the seeds.

Spread the seeds out in a dry well-ventilated area and allow them to dry thoroughly for approximately one week before storing them in a cool dry place for future planting seasons. The dry seed-saving method works exceptionally well for peppers.
