How to Save Flame Lettuce Seeds
Lettuce is primarily self-pollinating, making seed saving simple for home gardeners. Different lettuce varieties can typically be grown about 50 feet apart without cross-pollination concerns.
For seed saving, allow plants to overwinter once they reach about 2 inches tall before cold weather arrives. Apply heavy mulch for winter protection. In the following season, the lettuce will bolt, sending up tall flower stalks that can reach 4–5 feet in height. Once bolting begins, the leaves become bitter and are no longer ideal for eating.
Flowers will continue blooming for several weeks before seeds begin to form. Watch for feathery seed heads and gently shake them into a paper bag to collect mature seeds for future planting.
