How to Save Seeds
Lettuce is primarily self-pollinating, so different lettuce varieties can generally be grown about 50 feet apart while maintaining good seed purity.
For seed production, allow plants to establish before cold weather arrives. Mulch heavily through winter to protect the plants until spring growth resumes.
As temperatures warm, the plants will bolt and produce tall flowering stalks reaching 4 to 5 feet in height. Once bolting begins the leaves become bitter and are no longer suitable for eating.
Flowers will continue opening over several weeks, followed by feathery seed heads. Harvest mature seeds by gently shaking the dry seed heads into a paper bag.
Store cleaned seeds in labeled envelopes or airtight containers in a cool dry location for future planting.
