How to Save Navy Bean Seeds

Navy Beans are primarily self-pollinating, which means cross-pollination between bean varieties is relatively uncommon. However, occasional crossing can still occur under certain growing conditions.

If space is limited, gardeners often grow different colored bean varieties near one another and monitor harvested seeds for signs of crossing. For greater seed purity, separate different bean varieties by approximately 150 feet.

Allow Navy Bean pods to fully mature and dry on the plant before harvesting. After harvest, spread the pods out in a dry, well-ventilated area for an additional week to complete the curing process. Once fully dried, shell the beans from the pods and remove any damaged seeds or plant debris. Store clean, dry seeds in a cool, dry location for future planting seasons.
