Rainbow Indian Corn, also known as Glass Gem Corn, is a breathtaking heirloom maize variety celebrated for its dazzling spectrum of brilliantly colored kernels. Each ear displays a unique mosaic of translucent jewel-like shades ranging from deep blues and purples to vibrant reds, oranges, golds, and pearly whites, making this corn one of the most visually striking varieties ever grown.

Belonging to the Poaceae family alongside wheat and barley, Rainbow Indian Corn is valued not only for its remarkable ornamental beauty but also for its practical versatility. The colorful kernels can be used for decorative displays, wreaths, crafting projects, flour production, and even popcorn when harvested and dried properly. Its vibrant appearance makes it especially popular for autumn decorations and harvest festivals.

This adaptable heirloom variety thrives in fertile well-drained soil with full sunlight and warm temperatures. Plant seeds once soil temperatures reach at least 60°F for strong germination and healthy vigorous growth. Regular watering, especially during dry periods, helps support full ear development while compost or balanced fertilizer can further improve yields and plant vigor.

Beautiful, versatile, and deeply rooted in heirloom growing traditions, Rainbow Indian Corn remains one of the finest ornamental corn varieties for gardeners seeking vibrant color, abundant harvests, and remarkable visual appeal.

How to Save Seeds

Corn readily cross-pollinates with other corn varieties, so isolation by at least one mile is recommended for maintaining seed purity.

Allow ears to dry fully on the stalks before harvesting, but avoid leaving them exposed too long once dry conditions are reached.

For strong genetic diversity and healthy future harvests, collect seed from at least 100 separate corn plants whenever possible.

Once completely dry, rub kernels from the cobs and store seeds in a cool dry location for future planting.
