Red Malabar Spinach, scientifically known as Basella alba 'Rubra,' is a unique heirloom leafy green prized for both its beauty and productivity. Unlike traditional spinach varieties that struggle in summer heat, Red Malabar Spinach thrives in warm climates, making it an outstanding choice for hot-weather gardens.

This vigorous climbing plant produces striking dark green heart-shaped leaves paired with vibrant red stems that create a stunning ornamental display in the garden. The tender succulent leaves are highly nutritious and excellent fresh in salads, lightly sautéed, added to soups, or used much like traditional spinach.

Red Malabar Spinach grows rapidly once temperatures warm and benefits greatly from trellising or vertical support. Its vigorous vines can quickly cover fences, cages, or trellises while producing an abundant harvest throughout the growing season.

Beautiful, heat-tolerant, and highly productive, Red Malabar Spinach is a wonderful addition to edible landscapes and summer vegetable gardens alike.

How to Save Seeds

Allow Red Malabar Spinach plants to fully mature and produce seed pods toward the end of the growing season. The seed pods are long, slender, and slightly curved, making them easy to identify once mature.

Carefully harvest the mature seed pods from the vines without damaging them. Place the pods in a warm dry location for several weeks to finish drying completely.

As the pods dry, they will naturally split open and reveal the small black seeds inside. Once fully dry, remove the seeds and store them in a cool dry place until the next planting season.

Properly stored seeds can remain viable for several years and help preserve this beautiful heirloom variety for future gardens.
