How to Save Seeds
Tomatoes are primarily self-pollinating, so separating varieties by approximately 50 feet is usually sufficient for maintaining seed purity.
Harvest fully ripe tomatoes for seed saving. Fruits can even be allowed to sit for about a week after ripening before processing seeds.
Cut ripe tomatoes in half and scoop the seeds and pulp into a mason jar or container with a small amount of water. Cover loosely and allow the mixture to ferment in a warm location out of direct sunlight for approximately 5 to 7 days.
After fermentation, pour off floating seeds, pulp, and mold while retaining the good seeds that settle at the bottom. Rinse the healthy seeds thoroughly using a fine mesh strainer.
Spread the cleaned seeds onto paper towels or fine mesh screens and allow them to dry completely, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Store fully dried seeds in labeled airtight containers or envelopes in a cool dry location.
