How to Grow Russell Lupines

To grow Russell Lupines successfully, select a planting location that receives full sun to partial shade and provides enough space for their tall flower spikes. Lupines prefer fertile well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Improve the soil with compost or organic matter before planting. Sow Russell Lupine seeds in early spring or fall approximately 1/4 inch deep and space plants about 12 inches apart. Lightly scarifying or scratching the seed coat before planting may help improve germination rates.

Keep the soil consistently moist during germination without allowing it to become waterlogged. Water deeply once per week during dry periods. Applying mulch around the plants helps retain moisture and suppress weeds throughout the growing season.

Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continued flowering and trim back foliage in late fall. Monitor plants for common garden pests such as aphids and slugs, using organic pest management methods when necessary.

With proper care, Russell Lupines will reward gardeners with spectacular colorful blooms that return year after year while attracting pollinators and enhancing the beauty of the landscape.

Germination is awesome! I started them a little late though, so I haven't seen blooms yet. Definitely more the timing when I planted than the plant itself. Just can't wait to see how beautiful I'm sure they will be
