How to Save Seeds

Winter squash will readily cross-pollinate with other varieties within the same species. Waltham Butternut belongs to the Cucurbita moschata species, so separate it by at least 500 feet from other Cucurbita moschata varieties to maintain seed purity.

Allow fruits to fully mature on the vine until late in the season. Harvest mature squash and allow them to cure in a warm dry location for about one week before extracting seeds.

Cut open the squash, scoop out the seeds and pulp, and place them in water. Separate viable seeds from the pulp by washing thoroughly.

Spread cleaned seeds onto paper or a screen rack in a dry well-ventilated area. Turn seeds regularly during drying to ensure they dry completely and evenly over the course of about a week.

Store fully dried seeds in labeled envelopes or airtight containers in a cool dry place for future planting.
