How to Plant Garlic

Garlic is so easy to grow and has so many wonderful health benefits that we recommend growing it your garden. Here are so instructions to help you get started growing this awesome plant.

When getting ready to plant garlic start by carefully separating the cloves from the garlic bulb. Make sure the cloves stay sealed within the individual paper that surrounds each clove. If you have some cloves with exposed flesh you may want to save those for the kitchen so that they will not rot in the soil.

Plant the cloves in a nice loose rich bed of soil 4 to 6 inches apart and 1.5 to 2 inches deep with the pointy end sticking up. Make sure the soil is well drained; garlic doesn’t like wet feet. Once you have planted the cloves in loose soil gently cover them with a layer of good composted soil and then a type of mulch.

Don’t worry about covering them they will grow up through the mulch. We recommend some sort of hay since this will help them through the winter months and also discourage weed growth. We also recommend planting them sometime between the end of September to the middle of October.

The shoots may begin to emerge but the cold will kill them back this is ok. In the spring your garlic shoots will begin to emerge once again from the ground and you will want to pull back the mulch to water and you can add some fish emulsion or liquid seaweed for nutrients. You will be able to harvest them around June or July depending on your location.
