How to Save Seeds
Cabbage will readily cross pollinate with other members of the Brassica oleracea family including broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and brussels sprouts, so separate varieties by at least 1 mile for maintaining seed purity.
Cabbage is a biennial plant and requires overwintering before producing seeds. Protect plants during winter by heavily mulching or by lifting the heads and storing them in damp sand in a cool location between 35-40°F.
When spring arrives, replant the cabbage heads into the garden and allow the plants to bolt and produce flower stalks followed by seed pods.
Allow the seed pods to fully mature and dry on the plant before harvesting. Once dry, collect the pods, remove the seeds, and store them in a cool dry location inside labeled envelopes or airtight containers for future planting.
