How to Save Seeds

Cabbage will cross-pollinate with other members of the Brassica oleracea family including broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts, so separate varieties by at least one mile for seed purity.

Cabbage is a biennial crop and requires overwintering before it will produce seed. In mild climates plants can be heavily mulched outdoors through winter. In colder regions, carefully dig plants and store them in damp sand at temperatures between 35-40°F.

When spring arrives, replant the cabbage and allow it to bolt and flower. Once seed pods form and dry completely on the plant, harvest the pods and collect the seeds for storage.
