De Cicco Broccoli is a classic Italian heirloom variety treasured for its rich flavor, dependable production, and long harvest period. This productive broccoli produces beautiful deep green heads measuring approximately 3 to 5 inches across and continues producing abundant side shoots after the main head is harvested.

The tender flavorful heads and side shoots are excellent for fresh eating, steaming, roasting, stir fries, soups, casseroles, and freezing. De Cicco is especially valued for extending the harvest season since the plants continue producing side shoots for weeks after the central head is removed.

This hardy heirloom broccoli thrives in cooler growing conditions with fertile soil and full sun. A favorite among home gardeners, homesteaders, and market growers seeking reliable yields and traditional old-world broccoli flavor.

How to Save Seeds

Broccoli will readily cross pollinate with other members of the Brassica oleracea family including cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and brussels sprouts. Separate different varieties by at least 1 mile for maintaining seed purity.

Broccoli is a biennial plant and requires overwintering before producing seeds. In mild climates, plants can remain in the garden through winter with mulch protection if needed.

Allow some broccoli heads to remain on the plant after harvest season. During the following spring, the plants will bolt and produce tall flower stalks followed by seed pods.

Harvest the seed pods once they begin drying on the plant, but avoid waiting too long or pods may split open naturally. Dry the pods completely, remove the seeds, and store them in labeled airtight containers or envelopes in a cool dry location.
