Golden Bantam Sweet Corn is one of the most beloved heirloom sweet corn varieties ever introduced. First released in 1902 by W. Atlee Burpee & Co., this historic open-pollinated variety quickly gained popularity for its rich sweet flavor, tender kernels, and beautiful golden-yellow ears.

Unlike many modern hybrid corn varieties, Golden Bantam maintains its open-pollinated genetics, allowing gardeners to save seed year after year while preserving its outstanding flavor and heritage. The ears are packed with juicy kernels that deliver a classic old-fashioned corn taste that is hard to beat fresh off the cob.

This variety thrives in full sun and fertile well-drained soil. Strong sturdy stalks produce dependable harvests and perform especially well in traditional home gardens. Golden Bantam is excellent for fresh eating, grilling, freezing, canning, and countless summer recipes.

Whether you are preserving heirloom genetics or simply wanting incredible sweet corn flavor, Golden Bantam remains a timeless garden favorite.

How to Save Seeds

Corn readily cross-pollinates with other corn varieties, so maintaining seed purity requires separating different varieties by at least one mile.

Allow ears intended for seed saving to fully mature and dry naturally on the stalk before harvesting.

For strong genetic diversity and healthy future crops, collect seed from at least 100 separate corn plants whenever possible.

Once the ears are completely dry, rub the kernels from the cobs and store seeds in a cool dry place until the next planting season.
