Royal Burgundy Bush Beans are a striking and highly productive heirloom bush bean variety known for their vibrant deep purple pods and excellent garden performance. These vigorous plants grow slightly taller than many traditional green bush beans, making harvesting easier while adding beautiful color contrast to the garden.

The rich purple pods stand out brilliantly against the bright green foliage, making them easy to spot during harvest. The beans are tender, flavorful, and perfect for fresh eating, steaming, sautéing, freezing, or canning. Interestingly, the purple pods turn green when cooked while still maintaining their delicious flavor and texture.

Royal Burgundy Bush Beans are compact, productive plants that do not require trellising, making them ideal for raised beds, containers, and traditional garden rows. Their dependable yields and easy-growing nature make them an excellent choice for gardeners of all experience levels.

Fast growing and highly ornamental, these beans are both beautiful and practical, providing dependable harvests while adding vibrant color to summer vegetable gardens.

How to Save Seeds

Beans are primarily self-pollinating plants and rarely cross with other varieties, making seed saving relatively easy for home gardeners.

If growing multiple bean varieties nearby, slight crossing can occasionally occur. As a precaution, separate different bean varieties by approximately 150 feet if maintaining seed purity is important.

Allow bean pods to remain on the plant until they are fully mature, dry, and brittle. Mature pods should feel dry and papery before harvesting.

After harvesting, spread the pods out in a dry, well-ventilated area for an additional week to ensure complete curing and drying.

Once fully dry, shell the beans from the pods and remove any damaged or imperfect seeds. Store clean dry seeds in a cool, dark, and dry location for future planting seasons.

With proper storage, Royal Burgundy Bush Bean seeds can remain viable for several years while continuing to provide beautiful and productive garden harvests.
