Tendersweet Carrots are a beloved heirloom variety prized for their exceptionally sweet flavor, crisp texture, and vibrant orange roots. Often described as melt-in-your-mouth delicious, these carrots are a favorite among both children and adults, making them a standout addition to home gardens and fresh kitchen recipes alike.

These slender carrots develop smooth bright orange roots with a naturally sweet flavor that becomes even richer after cooler weather. Their tender texture and juicy crunch make them excellent for fresh eating straight from the garden while also performing beautifully in cooked dishes.

Tendersweet carrots are incredibly versatile in the kitchen and can be enjoyed raw in salads, shredded into slaws, roasted, steamed, sautéed, added to soups and stews, or juiced for a naturally sweet nutritious drink. Their outstanding flavor and color also make them a favorite for fresh snack trays and family meals.

Beyond their delicious taste, these carrots are packed with essential nutrients including vitamins A and K, potassium, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. Their high beta-carotene content supports healthy vision and overall wellness, making them a nutritious addition to any diet.

Tendersweet carrots grow best in loose fertile soil free of rocks and debris, allowing roots to develop long straight shapes. They thrive in cooler growing conditions and reward gardeners with dependable harvests and exceptional flavor.

How to Save Tendersweet Carrot Seeds

Carrots readily cross-pollinate with other carrot varieties as well as Queen Anne’s Lace, a wild relative commonly found in many regions. Before saving seeds, check your area for the presence of Queen Anne’s Lace and isolate carrot varieties by at least 1/4 mile to help maintain seed purity.

Carrots are biennial plants, meaning they produce seed during their second growing season. To save seed, allow healthy roots to overwinter in the garden beneath heavy mulch or carefully lift and store them in cool damp conditions before replanting in spring.

During the second season, tall flowering stalks will form umbrella-shaped flower clusters known as umbels. Allow the umbels to fully mature and dry on the plant before harvesting.

Once dry, collect the umbels and gently separate the seeds. Store cleaned seeds in a cool dry location inside labeled airtight containers for future planting seasons.
