Batavian Broad Leaf Endive is a beautiful heirloom variety dating back to the early 1800s and prized for its vibrant green leaves and dependable garden performance. The lush broad leaves resemble heading lettuce while offering the distinctive flavor and texture that make endive a favorite among salad growers and home gardeners.

This hardy variety is excellent for fresh salads, sautéing, soups, mixed greens, and gourmet dishes. When grown in cooler weather the leaves remain tender and pleasantly flavored, while hotter conditions can cause stronger bitterness and bolting.

Batavian Broad Leaf Endive is known for being exceptionally resilient and often reseeds itself naturally if allowed to mature in the garden. It performs wonderfully in spring and fall plantings and is an excellent addition to raised beds, homesteads, and market gardens.

 How to Save Seeds

Endive will cross pollinate with other endive varieties, so separate different varieties by at least 500 feet whenever possible to maintain seed purity.

Allow healthy plants to remain in the garden long enough to flower and produce seed heads naturally. The seed heads are ready for harvest once they turn brown and dry completely.

Cut the dried seed heads from the plants and place them into a labeled paper bag or container. Remove the seeds by rubbing the seed heads gently between your hands or lightly crushing them.

Separate seeds from debris and chaff before storing them in paper envelopes or airtight glass jars. Keep seeds in a cool dry location away from moisture and direct sunlight until ready for future planting.
