How to Save Seeds

Eggplant is primarily self-pollinating but cross-pollination can still occur. For maintaining seed purity, separate different eggplant varieties by at least 1/4 mile.

Allow fruits to remain on the plant well beyond the eating stage until they turn yellowish-brown and become dull in appearance. Mature seed fruits should remain off the ground whenever possible.

Cut the mature fruits open and scoop the seeds into a bowl of water. Viable seeds will sink while non-viable seeds and pulp will float to the top.

Pour away the floating debris and retain the good seeds from the bottom of the bowl. Rinse thoroughly and spread the seeds out to dry completely on paper towels or fine mesh screens.

Once fully dry, store the seeds in a cool dry location inside labeled envelopes or airtight containers until ready for future planting.
