How to Save Seeds

Eggplant is primarily self-pollinating but can cross-pollinate with other eggplant varieties. For pure seed saving, separate different varieties by approximately 1/4 mile.

Allow fruits selected for seed saving to fully mature on the plant and remain on the vine well beyond the edible stage. Mature seed fruits will gradually change color, becoming yellowish to brown as they ripen completely.

Harvest the overripe fruits and cut them open to scoop out the seeds into a bowl of water. Viable seeds will sink while immature or poor-quality seeds will float.

Carefully remove and discard floating debris and seeds. Rinse the healthy seeds thoroughly and spread them onto a screen, paper towel, or drying rack in a warm dry location with good air circulation.

Allow seeds to dry completely before storing in a cool dry place for future planting.
